What We Grow

How do we choose what to grow?

We choose our grow list based on how they measure up to the below categories. To make it on the recommended grow list it must meet at least three categories, four if it also has a negative trait. Planting something from this list is not required, but we would greatly appreciate it if everyone could do their best to do a reasonable sized crop in relation to your available space of at least one item on this list per harvest season.

Positive Traits:

  • Multiple harvest parts
  • Multiple harvests per season
  • Harvest extends through several seasons
  • Fast sowing to harvest date (60 days or less)
  • High protein
  • High calories
  • High minerals
  • High vitamins
  • High yield to space ratio
  • Easy Self Reproducer (if it’s described as “like a weed/menace/will take over everything/you’ll never get rid of it”)
  • Long shelf life (2+ months without canning/freezing/refrigeration/etc)
  • Protector plant (a companion plant that can be utilized to protect other plants)
  • Drought tolerant
  • Cold/frost/snow tolerant
  • Pest/disease resistant

Negative Traits:

  • Requires cross pollination
  • Requires cold stratification
  • Cannot harvest the first year or longer
